Our own Hudson River striped bass fishery is supported by stripers born in the Chesapeake Bay. Seventy to 90% of the Atlantic striped bass population uses the bay to spawn. The funding that the Chesapeake Bay could get from its passage will certainly benefit New York’s fish and wildlife. Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries is the largest striped bass nursery area on the Atlantic coast. New York’s two Great Lakes - Ontario and Erie - are important sport fisheries, generating millions of dollars for the state’s economy. Support fishing opportunities in the Great Lakes by authorizing and providing annual funding for coordinated research and monitoring of binational fisheries within the Great Lakes Basin.Boost fish and wildlife restoration efforts in the Chesapeake Bay by reauthorizing the Chesapeake Bay Program through 2025.Codify and secure future funding for the National Fish Habitat Partnership, which has overseen more than 840 projects to benefit fish habitat and populations.Establish a task force to address the spread of chronic wasting disease and ensure states have a coordinated plan to research, test and respond to it.NAWCA has improved more than 30 million acres of wetlands. This past week the bill was passed by the House of Representatives and is awaiting the President’s signature. Soon turned out to be eight months later in Washington time, that’s almost lightning speed. At the time, I was reporting that Senate had passed the ACE Act and that I was hopeful that the House of Representatives would take the bill up soon. While things may move slowly in Washington, thankfully they do move. In January, I talked about the ACE Act (America’s Conservation Enhancement Act), and its importance to the sporting community and the country’s wildlife conservation programs. Though EHD stricken deer have been found along roadways and in backyards, they are more likely to be found near and in swamps and along waterways. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is asking bowhunters to report any deer spotted that may have been affected by Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) in order to track the spread of the viral disease.ĮHD has been killing deer in the southeast New York for the last month to five weeks. The blackflies that carry the disease will likely continue their killing spree until the first hard frost. Is the Ilion, New York factory destined to be shuttered, or will it continue to be an economic engine for Mohawk Valley. The one loop that I wait to see closed is the fate of the original factory and the several hundreds of workers that make their livelihoods there in upstate New York.
